About the position

The position involves developing design solutions for clients' protection and control systems, ensuring compliance with NERC standards, and performing system disturbance analysis. The role requires technical leadership in engineering design and modifications, as well as conducting field inspections and evaluations to provide recommendations for protective relaying systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide lead engineer function in support of design modification projects and engineering studies.
  • Perform site visits for field inspections and condition assessments.
  • Conduct emergency response activities outside of normal business hours.
  • Coordinate cross-disciplinary activities for project execution.
  • Select and apply relevant codes, standards, and procedures to work tasks.
  • Perform inspections to ensure engineering requirements are met.
  • Provide technical leadership in engineering and analytical techniques.
  • Review designs and reports produced by internal engineers and external consultants.
  • Direct and review electrical design and drafting personnel.
  • Perform engineering design for protection and control systems.
  • Conduct short circuit studies and establish relay settings using software analysis programs.
  • Prepare specifications for purchasing protection and communication equipment.
  • Evaluate bid proposals and provide technical recommendations.
  • Perform system disturbance analysis and recommend modifications to protective relaying systems.
  • Review existing relay settings for proper coordination and recommend changes as needed.
  • Interface with manufacturers and regulatory bodies to stay updated on power system protection requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of six years of related work experience preferred.
  • Experience in Protective Relaying applied to Electrical Power Systems required.
  • Proficient in the design, operation, and maintenance of Protection and Control systems specific to the electric utility industry.
  • Working knowledge of protective relaying systems and their components.
  • Ability to utilize various communication systems for developing protective relaying systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented with relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • New York State Engineer in Training certification preferred.
  • Working experience with engineering software such as ASPEN and relay manufacturing software preferred.
