About The Position

Mass Audubon is looking for a dedicated seasonal Property Steward and Campground Host to work closely with the Property Managers at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to help maintain a positive experience for visitors, program participants, and campers staying in our campground. This position is an important role which helps ensure that Mass Audubon and its sanctuaries are inclusive, safe, and welcoming so more people have access and can connect with the joys of nature. This position will work on a variety of projects that are essential to the operation of Wellfleet Bay including daily cleaning of the sanctuary’s nature center and campground bathhouse; assisting with maintenance of the sanctuary’s five miles of trails; controlling invasive species; implementing Mass Audubon policies; and serving as an ambassador of Mass Audubon’s mission. This position will also serve as liaison to registered campers in our 18-site tent campground for Mass Audubon members which includes enforcing campground regulations, answering related questions, and monitoring visitor use. This position requires living on-site, and accommodations in the form of a private campsite are provided.

Requirements

  • Excellent reliability and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes outdoors under adverse conditions
  • Ability to walk over rough terrain for extended periods of time and lift and carry up to 40 lbs
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with a wide variety of people, including staff, visitors, campground registrants, and volunteers
  • Competency with basic forms of technology including email, internet, and Microsoft Office (primarily Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural competence and inclusion
  • Valid driver’s license and completion of a driver record check

Nice To Haves

  • Carpentry skills, tractor experience, and chainsaw training
  • First Aid certification
  • Valid Massachusetts pesticide applicator license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily general maintenance tasks including cleaning the nature center, public restrooms, and campground bathhouse; remove rubbish and recycling
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of sanctuary trails, boardwalks, signage, picnic tables, and program spaces
  • Assist with controlling invasive species, marking property boundaries, and mowing
  • Support educational and conservation science programs through facility set-up for scheduled programs and assistance with maintaining educational/research supplies and equipment
  • Interact with and provide information for members, visitors, and guests
  • Greet and orient registered campers to campground, ensure compliance with campground and property policies
  • Work with the Property Manager to develop weekly work plans to be completed both independently and cooperatively
  • Address issues as they arise on the wildlife sanctuary and in the campground (trespass, unauthorized uses, etc.)
  • Assist with maintenance of basic equipment such as hand tools and power tools
  • Serve as liaison to registered campers in tent campground, enforcing campground regulations, answering related questions, and monitoring visitor use
  • Assist with special projects as needed
