About The Position

Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies is seeking motivated students for a challenging and rewarding paid rotational internship opportunity. This fourteen-week, predominantly in-person property claims internship program offers a unique chance to learn about the insurance claims division in partnership with the agricultural community. Interns will engage in tasks such as adjusting Farm Owner desk and field claims, meeting local agents, and learning Xactimate estimating software. This internship provides firsthand experience in handling insurance claims for Michigan Farmers, supported by training and mentorship from various team members across different levels. The Property Claims Intern is part of the Agricultural Insurance Internship, which involves collaboration between five departments: Claims, Underwriting, Marketing, Agency, and Public Policy & Commodity Division. Interns will be hired into one specific area but will participate in rotational Wednesdays, spending each Wednesday in one of the five departments. Additionally, interns will have opportunities to participate in events such as an Intern Meet-n-Greet, a Lansing Lugnuts Game, and an Intern Farm Visit. The internship culminates in a Capstone Presentation, where interns will recap their summer experiences and projects.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student
  • Self-motivated and willing to 'Dive-in'
  • Basic knowledge of using a computer (word processing, navigation, etc.)
  • High understanding of technology is preferred
  • Provide own transportation
  • Be able to travel within the State of Michigan
  • Ability to dress for a professional setting
  • Dedicated to learning and continuous improvement

Responsibilities

  • Handle low severity property claims from end to end.
  • Review policy and apply coverage to claims.
  • Learn industry estimating software.
  • Use estimating platform with iPad to complete sketches for claims.
  • Participate in ride-a-longs with various department members.
  • Complete over the phone etiquette training.
  • Engage in weekly check ins which may include personal development workshops.
  • Opportunities to get out and see the industry and the different functions within it.
  • Collaborate with team members to provide your own agricultural knowledge.
  • Present Capstone project upon internship wrap up.
  • Participate in internship evaluation.
