The Project Support Substation Control/Physical Estimator positions at Southern Company Services involve providing project scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services for Transmission and Distribution Substations. The roles are based in Forest Park, GA, and are open to various levels of experience. The positions require collaboration with the Operating Company’s planning and budgeting processes to deliver accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs for substation projects. The work schedule is hybrid, with four days in-office and one day telecommute, and may require up to 25% travel.

  • Apply substation engineering expertise to evaluate projects and provide conceptual design layouts using CAD-based tools.
  • Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages for accurate cost estimates and project schedules.
  • Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management and Transmission Planning.
  • Serve as the substation Control/Physical engineering representative in project site meetings.
  • Provide input on the development and refinement of substation engineering estimating units.
  • Support and/or perform QA/QC of peer or contract vendor deliverables.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with substation scopes.
  • Serve as part of a storm restoration team when requested.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering for Engineer positions.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology or relevant experience for Designer positions.
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Distribution Substation Operations preferred.
  • Experience in Substation Engineering, Field Services, or Substation Construction preferred.
  • Experience with document management & estimating systems like TEAMS, STOMP, MAXIMO.
  • AutoCAD training, experience, or certification required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required.
  • Ability to create Substation Physical Design drawings from a single line diagram.
  • Strong understanding of substation equipment and safety codes.
  • Experience in Substation Control Design.
  • Substation protective relay testing experience.
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation.
