About The Position

Indian River State College is seeking a passionate and dependable Project STAGE Unified Sports Assistant to help bring inclusive athletics to life on campus. In this role, you’ll support Special Olympics Unified Sports® programming within the Unified Champion Schools® framework — intentionally creating opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete, connect, and grow together as teammates and peers. Working under direct supervision, you’ll assist with practices, games, and events that foster teamwork, shared leadership, and mutual respect. More than supporting logistics, you’ll help cultivate an environment where every participant feels valued, included, and empowered. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, The Project STAGE Unified Sports Assistant supports Special Olympics Unified Sports® programming in alignment with the Unified Champion Schools® framework. This role assists with inclusive sports and recreation activities that intentionally bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities as teammates and peers. The Unified Sports Assistant helps create an environment of belonging, teamwork, and mutual respect while supporting the day-today operations of Project STAGE Unified Sports activities

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess knowledge and skills in the subject/discipline.
  • Ability to commit to approximately 10 hours per week
  • Dependable, punctual, and comfortable following structured guidelines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in inclusive, team-based activities
  • Hands-on experience supporting Special Olympics Unified Sports® and Unified Champion Schools® programming
  • Development of leadership, teamwork, communication, and inclusion-focused skills.
  • Resume-building experience aligned with community engagement and service learning
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and management skills.
  • Strong communication skills – both verbal and written.

  • Interest or experience in athletics, recreation, education, human services, or related fields

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup, facilitation, and breakdown of Special Olympics Unified Sports® practices, games, and events.
  • Support coaches, staff, and volunteers to ensure activities follow Unified Sports principles of inclusion, shared leadership, and equal participation.
  • Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for all Unified partners and athletes.
  • Model inclusive behavior and positive peer interaction consistent with Unified Champion Schools® values.
  • Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship, and relationship-building among Unified partners.
  • Support opportunities for social inclusion beyond competition (e.g., team bonding, campus engagement).
  • Assist with equipment organization, inventory, and storage.
  • Support attendance tracking, check-in, and basic record keeping for Unified Sports activities.
  • Help communicate schedules, reminders, and event details to participants as directed.
  • Treat all participants with dignity, respect, and confidentiality.
  • Follow college policies related to accessibility, safety, and student conduct.
  • Uphold Special Olympics and Unified Champion Schools guidelines during all activities
