The Processing Archivist at the University of Virginia Library is a three-year term position responsible for processing and creating descriptions for University Archives and archival collections related to Virginia history and politics. The role involves proposing processing plans, arranging records in physical and digital formats, creating descriptions using ArchivesSpace, conducting preservation assessments, and participating in reference desk service. The Processing Archivist will implement an inclusive and reparative framework in their work and collaborate with library staff on various activities.

  • Process and create descriptions for University Archives and archival collections.
  • Propose processing plans and arrange records in physical and digital formats.
  • Create descriptions using ArchivesSpace.
  • Conduct preservation and condition assessments for collections.
  • Provide reports on the status and progress of processing work.
  • Participate in regular reference desk service in the reading room.
  • Support the transfer of records to the archives and supervise student workers.
  • Implement an inclusive and reparative framework in archival processing work.
  • Collaborate with library staff on unit-wide and university-wide activities.
  • ALA-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree or related advanced degree, or a bachelor's degree with 4 years of experience in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Coursework covering archival theory and practice for both physical and born-digital content.
  • High familiarity with archival arrangement and description, DACS, EAD, and MPLP strategy.
  • High familiarity with ArchivesSpace or other collections management platforms.
  • Ability to read and interpret handwritten cursive.
  • Valid driver's license or willingness to obtain one upon hire.
  • Experience arranging and describing archival collections according to nationally accepted standards.
  • Experience processing born digital collections.
  • Familiarity with best practices for web archives.
  • Experience editing EAD in oXygen or another XML editor.
  • Understanding of records management practices and FERPA.
  • Knowledge of Virginia history and politics and/or the history of the University of Virginia.
