About The Position

RK&K is hiring an experienced Rail/Transit Project Planner in Fairfax, VA. As a Senior Rail / Transit Planner, you will be responsible for leading the preparation, analysis, and interpretation of complex technical information related to rail and transit planning initiatives. The position requires advanced proficiency across a broad range of transportation planning disciplines, with an emphasis on rail and transit systems, including multi-modal planning, land use integration, corridor and alternatives analysis, transit service and operations planning, travel demand and ridership forecasting, freight and passenger rail coordination, traffic and systems engineering, alignment and station area studies, and advanced applications of geographic information systems.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in transportation planning, with demonstrated rail and/or transit planning experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in technical and non-technical professional writing, including preparation of complex planning documents
  • Advanced knowledge of transportation planning principles, rail and transit systems, and regulatory processes
  • BS in Urban & Regional Planning, Transportation Engineering, or a related field

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification such as AICP, or equivalent experience in rail or transit planning
  • Advanced GIS analysis skills, data visualization, and cartography
  • Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Engineering, or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, review, and implementation of complex rail and transit planning projects from planning through implementation
  • Serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert on rail and transit initiatives, providing guidance to project teams and junior staff
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders on projects spanning conceptual planning, environmental documentation, preliminary engineering, and construction support
  • Apply advanced analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to address complex transportation and transit challenges
  • Identify, evaluate, and secure funding for rail and transit programs through local, state, and federal sources; lead or significantly contribute to grant strategy, preparation, and submission
  • Support and advise project managers in the preparation of technical memoranda, planning documents, public materials, recommendations, and final deliverables
  • Lead and participate in public and stakeholder engagement activities, including public meetings, open houses, workshops, agency briefings, and advisory committees
  • Prepare and review high-quality technical reports, planning documents, tools, and presentations for agency leadership, governing boards, technical committees, and public audiences
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to staff development, quality control, and continuous improvement of planning practices
