About The Position

The Project Planner for Historic Resources in Winston-Salem, NC, is responsible for leading planning processes and preparing reports for consideration by appointed and elected bodies. This role involves working with historic districts and properties, providing professional support to the Forsyth County Historic Resource Commission, and ensuring compliance with preservation laws. The planner will engage with various stakeholders, conduct field inspections, and assist in neighborhood revitalization and long-range planning efforts.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in historic preservation, planning, or related field with three years of experience; or a Bachelor's degree with five years of experience.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures related to historic preservation.
  • Knowledge of historic building materials, preservation technology, and urban planning principles.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with property owners, designers, and public officials.
  • Ability to manage projects and coordinate the work of other staff.
  • Excellent writing and public presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with the Secretary of Interior Standards and with a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

Responsibilities

  • Lead planning processes and complete reports for appointed/elected body consideration.
  • Work with historic districts and properties, including Old Salem and Historic Bethabara.
  • Provide professional staff support to the Forsyth County Historic Resource Commission.
  • Review projects for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local agencies to protect historic resources.
  • Prepare historic preservation plans and ordinances, including studies of diverse neighborhoods.
  • Intake and process certificates of appropriateness and consult with property owners and designers.
  • Conduct field inspections of properties and provide analysis and recommendations.
  • Seek means to recognize and protect historic resources, including designations and markers.
  • Provide information and technical assistance to the public.
  • Assist with neighborhood revitalization, housing, downtown planning, and long-range planning.
