Project Manager with Data Center Experience

Apex Multifamily BuildersHouston, TX
9d$100,000 - $130,000Onsite

About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Project Manager with a proven track record in data center construction to lead mission-critical projects. This role owns the project from preconstruction through commissioning — managing schedule, budget, subcontractors, owner relationships, and closeout. You will work alongside our in-house superintendents and trade crews and interface directly with owners, engineers, and commissioning teams. This is a high-accountability role for someone who has done it before and knows how to deliver in a demanding environment.

Requirements

  • Data center construction experience is a hard requirement. Do not apply if you have not directly managed data center or mission-critical construction projects as a PM or Sr. PM.
  • Minimum 5 years of construction Project Management experience, with at least 3 years specifically on data center or mission-critical projects
  • Demonstrated experience managing MEP-intensive scopes including electrical distribution, standby power, precision cooling, and low-voltage systems
  • Proficiency with project management software — Procore required; P6 or MS Project preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of data center Tier classification standards (Uptime Institute or equivalent)
  • Solid understanding of commissioning processes (Cx, IST, and integrated systems testing)
  • Proven ability to manage project budgets of $5M and above
  • Experience managing multiple subcontractors simultaneously in a fast-paced, phased environment
  • Strong contract knowledge — AIA, ConsensusDocs, or equivalent; ability to manage change orders and protect the company's position
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification required; current OSHA 30 preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with hyperscale or colocation data center clients (Equinix, Digital Realty, CyrusOne, QTS, or similar)
  • Familiarity with BICSI, ASHRAE, and TIA-942 standards
  • PMP certification or DBIA accreditation
  • Active relationships with MEP subs and commissioning agents in the Austin/Central Texas market
  • Experience with critical infrastructure in live, occupied facilities (raised floor environments, hot aisle/cold aisle containment)

Responsibilities

  • Own full project lifecycle from preconstruction through final commissioning and closeout on data center and mission-critical construction projects
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and cost controls; maintain accurate forecasting and report variances to ownership
  • Lead weekly OAC meetings, subcontractor coordination meetings, and commissioning planning sessions
  • Coordinate with MEP engineers, commissioning agents, and equipment vendors on critical systems including power distribution, cooling (CRAC/CRAH), UPS, generators, and structured cabling
  • Drive the RFI, submittal, and change order process with discipline and speed — no lag on the critical path
  • Manage and enforce quality control standards across all trades; ensure work meets data center Tier specifications and owner requirements
  • Maintain strict safety compliance on-site; enforce OSHA standards and site-specific safety plans
  • Coordinate with AHJ, utility providers, and commissioning authorities on inspections, energization, and occupancy milestones
  • Manage subcontractor performance, including scope adherence, schedule compliance, and pay application review
  • Build and maintain strong owner and client relationships; be the face of Apex on every project
