About The Position

The Project Manager supports the mission and strategic priorities of the ND–IBM Tech Ethics Lab by providing day-to-day operational and administrative oversight of the Lab’s research project portfolio and leading implementation of its external engagement efforts. Working closely with the Lab Director and key internal and external partners, the Project Manager ensures the effective execution, coordination, and translation of the Lab’s work to advance its leadership in the field of technology ethics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (4 years); Advanced degree preferred
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in project management, research administration, communications, or a related field.
  • 3 to 4 years
  • Strong project management, administrative, and coordination skills in academic or research environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex research for non-specialist audiences.
  • High attention to detail and comfort with compliance-driven processes.
  • Experience working across faculty, institutional, and external partner contexts.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, with the ability to proactively identify needs, propose solutions, and follow through on implementation.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an eagerness to learn and adapt in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
  • Comfort operating in environments characterized by change, ambiguity, and emerging priorities.
  • Team-oriented, comfortable in a collaborative, fast-paced office culture.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director to implement and manage the Lab’s research portfolio, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Track, organize, and monitor all Lab research projects; maintain a centralized database of projects, milestones, and outputs.
  • Establish regular check-ins with Principal Investigators to support coordination, accountability, and progress.
  • Monitor projects through completion, ensuring timely closeout and collection of deliverables in accordance with approved research proposals and University guidelines.
  • Prepare and support quarterly reporting for the Lab’s Steering Committee, including tracking progress against milestones and synthesizing project updates.
  • Manage and maintain the Lab’s online collaborator community (via Slack or similar platform), facilitating connection, information-sharing, and engagement among affiliates, fellows, Program Chairs, and IBM partners.
  • Facilitate day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the Tech Ethics Lab.
  • Manage reimbursements.
  • Provide administrative and operational support, including processes related to pre/post-doc hiring, faculty appointments, and inter-unit agreements.
  • Support fiscal, policy, and compliance processes in alignment with University requirements.
  • Coordinate logistics for Lab meetings, events, and convenings, including scheduling, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Assist with onboarding and offboarding of Lab affiliates, including Program Chairs and Graduate Fellows.
  • Coordinate with the Lab’s network of affiliates, fellows, Program Chairs, and collaborators to develop and publish regular Lab content, including research summaries, thought leadership pieces, and other communications for academic, industry, policy, and public audiences.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality external-facing materials, including website content and digital research narratives, drawing on contributions from Lab affiliates.
  • Disseminate Lab research and activities through appropriate channels, including coordination with University partners as needed to amplify high-profile or noteworthy Lab outputs and accomplishments.
  • Manage a Lab content calendar, tracking deadlines, contributors, and publication timelines across channels.
  • Lead the preparation and coordination of the Lab’s annual report, synthesizing research outputs and program activities from across the Lab ecosystem.
  • Lead in the coordination and execution of external Lab conferences and workshops, namely the Lab’s annual fall event.
  • Support the implementation of regular Lab campus programs and events, including weekly seminars, periodic workshops, and other on-campus gatherings.
  • Translate strategic priorities into operational plans, timelines, and task tracking.
  • Support strategic planning related to the Lab’s mission, vision, success metrics, and research priorities.
  • Support relationship-building with IBM partners and other collaborators through coordination and follow-through.
  • Supports the ECG mission and contributes to the Institute's flagship events, as needed.
