About The Position

As a Project Manager within AEI’s Resilience Group, you will work on FORTIFIED Commercial and Multifamily projects, perform Property Resilience Assessments (PRA) compliant with ASTM E3429-24 on existing properties, and support the team performing natural and climate risk assessments. Your role will focus on the technical review and implementation of resilience measures for commercial and multifamily properties, working alongside experts in the field. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, with expertise in structural drawings, wind load calculations, and building envelope systems. You will also support broader resilience assessments and be encouraged to expand your knowledge of various hazards affecting property performance. Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in risk engineering, loss prevention studies, or site-specific wind evaluations for commercial and multifamily properties.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting structural drawings, wind load calculations, and building envelope systems.
  • Deep understanding of ASCE 7 “Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures.”
  • Familiarity with FORTIFIED standards for commercial and multifamily buildings and/or ASTM Standard Guide for Property Resilience Assessments.
  • Knowledge of building codes, test standards, and product approvals (FM Approvals, Florida Product Approval, Miami-Dade, TDI, UL, etc.).
  • Experience with low-slope and steep-slope roof systems, roof decks, and roof-mounted equipment.
  • Ability to interpret climate and natural hazard data from proprietary and public sources (e.g., FEMA).
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and hazard expert consultants.
  • Willingness to learn about various hazards and resilience strategies, actively sharing knowledge to enhance the team’s expertise.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; able to write clear technical reports and present findings.
  • Personable and able to communicate effectively with people at all levels.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in various forms.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Zoom.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to conduct site visits, including climbing ladders and navigating building interiors and exteriors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or related field) required.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE or SE), Registered Architect, Engineer Intern (EI) or IIBEC certification (RBEC, CBECxP) preferred; FORTIFIED accredited evaluator a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage FORTIFIED Commercial and Multifamily projects, overseeing design review, construction, evaluation, and compliance with FORTIFIED standards.
  • Perform Property Resilience Assessments, including vulnerability analysis of major building systems, site visits, interviews, and risk identification using climate data projections.
  • Review architectural and structural drawings for compliance with FORTIFIED and resilience requirements, including wind loads, continuous load paths, and building envelope systems.
  • Conduct and oversee site surveys and field inspections to verify installation and construction quality for both FORTIFIED and resilience assessment projects.
  • Evaluate product submittals (windows, doors, walls, flashing, roof assemblies) for approval and compliance with FORTIFIED standards.
  • Provide recommendations for mitigation and adaptation measures, including cost estimates.
  • Prepare and submit supporting documentation (drawings, calculations, photos, compliance forms) for FORTIFIED designation and resilience assessments.
  • Write clear, concise technical reports and communicate findings and recommendations to clients, IBHS, and stakeholders.
  • Identify and address omissions or errors in installation related to FORTIFIED and resilience standards.
  • Stay current with evolving standards and best practices in resilience, hazard mitigation, and FORTIFIED requirements.
  • Deliver outstanding client service through timely responses, proactive solutions, and effective communication.
  • Manage multiple projects, excelling in both independent work and collaborative team environments.
  • Travel for projects and professional duties as necessary.
