About The Position

Under direction, performs professional mechanical engineering work for school buildings and facilities involving design, design review and coordination, drawings and specification preparation, investigation and resolution of mechanical system problems in existing schools, preparation of feasibility study for additions or modifying mechanical systems or equipment in existing schools; cost estimates for budgeting and construction, assistance to mechanical technicians in field inspections of new construction, post construction evaluation on new construction, addition or modification, updating of MCPS specifications on mechanical engineering matters and project engineering for major facilities. Serves as project manager for a variety of capital improvement projects including additions, modernizations, and new construction. Physical Demands: Requires walking over rough, uneven, and rocky surfaces at construction sites and climbing ladders and scaffolding for inspections. Special Requirements: Requires traveling to construction sites on a frequent and unscheduled basis.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the current principles, practices, theory, codes, and materials applicable within the field of mechanical engineering to the construction of school or similar buildings.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and practices as they relate to mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and practices.
  • Ability to review and analyze mechanical engineering plans, specifications, and equipment drawings and to detect errors in design or deviations from directives or codes.
  • Ability to appraise the quality and rate of construction progress.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with architects, contractors, utility company personnel, school staff, and communities.
  • Ability to develop and prepare written recommendations and reports, plans/specifications for bidding, and provide expert mechanical system advice.
  • Ability to design and evaluate computerized energy monitoring and control systems in schools.
  • Ability to use standard application software within the engineering field.
  • Good communication and human relations skills.
  • Bachelor^s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Considerable consulting engineering and design experience in Electrical engineering relative to schools, buildings, and facilities design and construction.
  • Experience in project management of construction projects.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered, and which must include considerable electrical engineering course work and Electrical engineering design experience.
  • State of Maryland Professional Engineering License (Electrical) or the ability to acquire such a license within six months.
