About The Position

Working under the guidance of the Traffic Engineer, assists in the planning, analysis, and implementation of traffic engineering and traffic operations projects related to city streets and rights-of-way. Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, consultants, contractors, law enforcement, and all members of the general public. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Assists in conducting traffic studies and field investigations, including the collection of traffic volume, speed, turning movement, pedestrian, and crosswalk data using electronic and manual traffic data collection methods. Work is performed in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and applicable state and local standards. Assists in the deployment, programming, and monitoring of portable variable message boards, including message development and placement consistent with MUTCD requirements and City policy. Compiles, analyzes, and summarizes traffic and crash data; assists in preparing collision diagrams, monthly crash data sorting, technical memorandums, and traffic study reports. Assists in preparing work orders, diagrams, and instructions for the installation, removal, or modification of traffic control signs, pavement markings, and traffic detection equipment by department crews. Conducts field investigations related to citizen service requests and complaints involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, pavement markings, speeding concerns, and pedestrian safety issues. Provides technical recommendations within assigned scope of responsibility. Assists in reviewing traffic control plans for construction, utility work, and special events, and assists in monitoring and inspecting temporary traffic control installations to ensure compliance with approved plans and safety standards. Assists in coordinating traffic operations and traffic control needs for citywide special events, street construction, utility projects, and emergency traffic diversions in coordination with Police and other agencies. Documents street lighting inventory and conditions; assists in evaluating lighting needs and coordinating maintenance or improvement requests. Assists in maintaining traffic engineering equipment and inventory, including traffic data collection devices and portable message boards, and ensures equipment is properly maintained and operational. Prepares and maintains daily, monthly, and annual reports and records related to traffic studies, device deployments, crash data, and field activities. Is specifically alert to conditions and events occurring on city streets and rights-of-way and can respond accordingly. While performing job duties, takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. May assist other Community Works divisions with capital improvement projects or field activities as needed and directed by the Traffic Engineer or City Engineer.

Requirements

  • This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy, which includes the following: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
  • Extensive background checks required.
  • Graduation from a college or university with an associate degree in engineering, or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly preferred.
  • IMSA and/or ATSSA Traffic Work Zone training and certification within one year of employment.
  • Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and IMSA Work Zone Safety Manual within one year of employment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods of operations appropriate to the Traffic Engineering Division and of the care and use of related equipment.
  • Valid state driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.
  • Ability to make field changes to enhance projects or correct oversight.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.
  • Familiarity with applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting Division activities.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate, in English, both orally and in writing with employees, contractors, governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public in person and on the phone.
  • Ability to conduct necessary engineering research and compile comprehensive reports.
  • Must be able to work with minimal direction, following initial instructions in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to meet time and cost constraints with accuracy, following appropriate guidelines.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.
  • At this position level, the ability to graduate from a college or university with an associate degree in engineering, or a closely related field is within two-years of hire date is required.

  • Experience in drafting software such as Civil-3D is preferred.
