About The Position

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Project Engineer I (Night Shift | Wet Utilities) with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Project Engineer will review, provide analysis, management, and resolution of field coordination issues with project team members and participants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2–5+ years of relevant construction or engineering experience; wet utility experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of water distribution, sanitary sewer, storm systems, and related installation methods.
  • Ability to work full-time night shift and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency with construction drawings, RFIs, submittals, and project documentation software.
  • Excellent communication, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on large infrastructure or mission‑critical projects (data centers, industrial, heavy civil) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee night-shift construction activities related to water, sanitary sewer, stormwater, and other underground wet utility systems.
  • Provide engineering and technical guidance to craft teams, subcontractors, and inspectors.
  • Monitor installation methods, materials, and quality to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and local standards.
  • Assist with troubleshooting field issues and developing corrective actions.
  • Interpret project plans, specifications, and details for subcontractors and craft persons
  • Implement the pre-construction quality plan
  • Obtain and maintain construction permits; manage fee payments and recurring expenses
  • Develop and maintain Material Tracking List, Project Test and Inspection Listing, Concrete Placement Log, Non-Conformance Report
  • Manage, create, and distribute contract documents
  • Establish handling procedures for electronic documents (RFIs, correspondence)
  • Incorporate processes and procedures for project closeout phase
  • Manage testing and inspection processes for construction quality management
  • Implement three-phase inspection system
  • Establish reporting formats, protocols, schedules, and off-site testing procedures
  • Notify Project Manager and Superintendent of non-conforming test results or inspection items
  • Manage submittals: set up register, obtain customer/architect approval, prepare transmittal forms, coordinate packaging, review, and processing
  • Expedite submittals to align with project schedule
  • Communicate submittal process details to subcontractors and suppliers
  • Issue submittal requirement letters
  • Provide periodic updates of submittal register to customer or architect
  • Coordinate subcontractor details: verify insurance, prepare paperwork, request final payment
  • Develop and distribute RFIs and Change Orders
  • Define and implement procedures for posting revisions and updates to as-built construction documents
  • Incorporate subcontractor as-built documentation into contract document updates
  • Mentor, manage, and evaluate field engineers
  • Determine alternative work methods as needed
  • Coordinate safety and compliance for all team members
  • Maintain schedule of timelines and ensure completion
