About The Position

Atlanta Gas Light is looking for Engineers interested in joining this country’s vital natural gas industry. Natural Gas is an essential part of America’s Energy mix and a trusted energy source for more than 70 million homes and businesses. This position is an exciting opportunity for engineers who enjoy the challenges and responsibilities of coordinating the construction of natural gas transmission and distribution facilities. The right candidate must be a self-starter and able to make sound decisions. Incumbents in this role administer external resources who construct gas utility infrastructure, while delivering on financial and operating objectives. The Associate Engineer drives quality and safety expectations and ensures that those standards are met within a functional or regional area. Please note, this position is posted as a job family and may be filled at either the Engineer, I (Level 3), Engineer, II (Level 4) or Engineer, III (Level 5). People who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education and certifications may be eligible for the advanced grade. Functional Expertise: Oversees construction of underground gas utility infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Makes decisions in the field and coordinates with internal and/or external service providers and support departments (environmental and real estate) and external agencies to ensure that work is performed as planned, permitted, and scheduled. Inspects Construction (safety, compliance, quality, locates and restoration). Reviews and approves work orders, progress reports, field changes, invoices, as-built records and bid contracts to ensure compliance and company standards and policies. Updates as necessary, Management, Sales, Engineering, and other applicable stakeholders on project progress. Monitors project specific budget and/or cost per unit variances and identifies exceptions/variances. Business Acumen: Analyzes costs and benefits for specific construction projects and evaluates alternatives to ensure cost effectiveness of construction projects. Evaluates and recommends field design changes to keep construction projects on schedule and at or below forecasted spend Engagement: Interprets pipeline contracts to effectively leverage and negotiate the application of contractual items with external service providers. Maintains customer satisfaction through timely and thorough communication with individual customers, municipalities, and other governmental agencies at pre-con meetings and throughout the project (such as state Department of Transportation, cities, counties, etc.). Influences external contractors who represent the company by shadowing corporate values. Driving Results: Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives. Measures employee performance and sets safety, quality and productivity metrics. Creates and/or implements improved processes and techniques to enhance operating environments.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Engineering from an ABET Accredited School (Mechanical, Civil or General)
  • 0-2 years of progressive Engineering experience (Project Engineer I)
  • 2-4 years of progressive Engineering experience (Project Engineer II)
  • 4+ years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas or other pipeline facilities (Project Engineer III)
  • 2 + years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices (Project Engineer III)
  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
  • MS Office - advanced proficiency
  • Project Management (Project Engineer II & III)
  • Ability to influence and persuade in decision making (Project Engineer II & III)

Responsibilities
