About The Position

Shaw Industries is seeking a Project Engineer/CAD Designer - Corporate Engineering. Under the limited direction of the Enterprise Utilities Manager, the position is primarily responsible and accountable for project development and execution, CAD drawing development, and drawing system management. Work is often multi-disciplined and requires close coordination with project stakeholders, technical resources, and other engineers. The engineer prepares technical specifications and utilizes project management tools to ensure projects meet safety, quality, performance, and budget requirements. In addition to the project management requirements, this position is responsible for producing working AutoCAD drawings (2D & 3D) in preparation for project work along with providing CAD support for other engineers and engineering groups within CE. Shaw Industries Corporate Engineering (CE) provides engineering support for the Corporation's Manufacturing, Distribution, Sales, and Administrative Facilities. Although its primary base is in Dalton, GA, CE is deployed on projects from southern California to coastal South Carolina, as well as internationally. The department provides feasibility studies, high-level, and detailed budget estimates, engineering design, project management, consulting, forensic investigations, and CAD services. CE has specialists to serve the needs of each segment of the business and is divided into four main support groups: Fibers & Yarn, Carpet & Backing and Utilities, Hard Surfaces, Infrastructure & Global Facilities. Requirements

  • 4-year Engineering or Technical degree preferred with 5 years related experience OR 10+ years industrial project and AutoCAD experience.
  • Must be able to work required project-related overtime.
  • Must have good managerial skills.
  • Must be able to communicate ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to organize and effectively lead meetings.
  • Experience with project scheduling software is a plus.
  • Experience with AutoCAD is required.
  • Some travel may be required, depending on project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Solicits and documents project requirements and inputs from project stakeholders.
  • Translate requirements and inputs into working system designs, utilizing technical skills, experience, and education to determine loads, speeds, energy requirements, etc.
  • Seek approvals from Management to proceed with expenditures required to expand or maintain manufacturing facilities.
  • Combine specifications, standards, drawings, and other documentation into bid packages and solicit bids for equipment and/or services.
  • Track and maintain control of approved project expenditures.
  • Issue requisitions and approve receipts/invoices.
  • Publish periodic project reports.
  • Manage contractors on site ensuring that corporate and plant policies such as safety, ethics, environmental, etc. are enforced.
  • Take full responsibility for all contractor activities; act as the primary liaison between Corporate Engineering and plant management.
  • Perform Quality Control function, inspecting all contractor work and vendor-supplied equipment to ensure compliance with specifications, drawings, timeline requirements, etc.
  • Produce detailed AutoCAD-based and Inventor-based mechanical and electrical drawings to support both self-managed projects and projects managed by other engineers.
  • Gather field data necessary to develop drawing plans and details.
  • Act as a primary user for a Leica Point Cloud Scanner to quickly collect as-is field conditions and transform the collected data into 3D scans.
  • Modify and update existing drawings to show both current state conditions and proposals for new and modified equipment layouts.
  • Utilizing and maintaining the Corporate AutoCAD Vault database.
  • Serving as CAD support for other engineers and engineering groups as required in project execution.
  • Act as a primary owner for the Corporate Engineering AutoCAD Vault database.
  • Maintain, adhere to, and champion the use of drawing standards, including layer controls, drawing templates, title blocks, etc.
  • Support other CAD users by answering AutoCAD/Inventor how-to questions.
