Project Developer - Mechanical

Mantis InnovationBurlington, MA
1d$120,000 - $140,000Hybrid

About The Position

Mantis Innovation provides managed facility services and turnkey program management with technology-enabled solutions that target the entire building footprint. We look at the entire facility—inside and out—and can impact 70% of what a building operator allocates critical budget dollars toward, including: Strategic electricity and natural gas procurement, renewable energy, and demand response; climate impact reduction and reporting, net zero strategies, and sustainability planning; roofing, solar, HVAC assessment management, pavement, building envelope, data center optimization, and EV charging; lighting/LED retrofits, HVAC/mechanical systems, and BMS/BAS improvements and implementation. The Project Developer (Mechanical) supports the evaluation, development, and execution of energy efficiency projects across industrial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, distribution, and complex commercial facilities. This role focuses on existing mechanical systems' performance, cost, constructability, and operational reliability. This role combines technical field work, engineering analysis, and solution development. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical systems expertise, can confidently interface with customers, and is comfortable balancing both field-based assessments and detailed engineering calculations. The role requires strong independent engineering judgment, the ability to evaluate facilities end-to-end, and the discipline to translate findings into actionable project scopes. The Mechanical Solution Engineer works cross-functionally with Technical Solutions, Mechanical, BMS, and Sales teams to support project development from initial assessment through client delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, facilities engineering, or industrial systems analysis
  • Working knowledge of HVAC and mechanical systems in complex facilities
  • Strong communication skills and comfort interacting with customers
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent engineering analysis
  • Ability to travel locally with occasional national travel (up to ~20%)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in industrial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or distribution environments.
  • Experience with building performance standard policies, LEED certification, etc.
  • Exposure to building automation systems (BMS) and controls integration.
  • Familiarity with lighting systems or service operations is a plus.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar technical credential (not required).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), PE track, or Professional Engineer (PE).

Responsibilities

  • Field Assessment & Existing Conditions Analysis
  • Evaluate mechanical systems including HVAC, process cooling/heating, and related infrastructure in operating facilities both on-site and using remote tools.
  • Conduct site assessments independently and document system condition, constraints, and improvement opportunities. Identify and document existing equipment, control strategies, and operational issues.
  • Analyze system performance, operational risks, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Interpret utility data, system loads, and operating profiles as inputs to project development.
  • Project Development & Technical Scoping
  • Develop clear mechanical project scopes, assumptions, and technical recommendations.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including load calculations, equipment sizing, and energy savings analyses that meet utility technical review standards.
  • Support feasibility analysis, cost modeling, and constructability considerations
  • Partner with internal engineering, BMS, and service teams to refine solutions
  • Ensure recommendations are grounded in operational reality, not theoretical optimization
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Mechanical, Service, and BMS teams to align project intent and execution approach.
  • Support handoff of defined scopes to delivery teams.
  • Participate in internal technical reviews and problem-solving discussions.
  • Interface with vendors and contractors as needed during project definition.
  • Client & Stakeholder Communication
  • Meet with internal and external stakeholders to review findings, discuss recommended measures, and support solution development.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Support preparation of reports, exhibits, and presentations related to mechanical projects
  • Maintain a client-facing presence appropriate to an engineering advisory role.
  • Coordinate with utility representatives to ensure projects qualify for incentive programs.
