About The Position

The Project Cost Controller supports cost management and financial controls for heavy civil construction projects. This role assists with budget development, cost tracking, forecasting, and reporting to help ensure projects remain within approved financial targets. The position works closely with Project Managers, Operations, and the Cost Control team to support accurate financial reporting and continuous improvement of cost control processes. This individual will also play an active role with the cost control team in the implementation of new cost control processes and the rollout and adoption of new software tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (required).
  • 0–5 years of experience in construction cost control, project controls, or financial analysis.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally to job sites as required.
  • Comfortable communicating financial and cost-related information at multiple organizational levels.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new systems, processes, and technologies.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or co-op experience in construction or finance is a plus.
  • Familiarity with construction accounting or cost management software (e.g., Vista, Procore) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with project budget development, cost coding, and financial planning.
  • Support project setup in cost control and accounting systems.
  • Assist with the implementation and standardization of cost tracking systems and procedures.
  • Track project costs and assist with variance analysis against budget and forecast.
  • Support operations in updates of cost forecasts based on project progress, commitments, and approved changes.
  • Support monthly cost review processes with project teams.
  • Assist with documenting scope changes and evaluating cost impacts.
  • Support the processing of change orders, budget adjustments, and cost transfers.
  • Help identify potential cost risks and support mitigation efforts.
  • Maintain cost control practices to support overall project financial performance.
  • Participate in the implementation of new cost control processes and best practices.
  • Support the rollout, testing, and adoption of new cost control and project management software.
  • Assist with system improvements, data integrity, and user support as processes and tools evolve.
  • Support preparation of cost control reports for operations and finance management.
  • Communicate cost-related information clearly and accurately to a wide range of stakeholders, from all levels of field personnel to executive leadership, including the COO.
  • Travel to local job site locations as needed (mostly day trips with longer stays as required) to support project teams and gain firsthand understanding of project conditions and progress.
