Responsibilities: Responsible to develop bilayer and nanolaminate films using the custom-built atomic layer deposition system in LLE 2610. The films will be deposited on a variety of substrates, including both silicon wafers and various types of steel. Once films are deposited, the student will be expected to perform standard material characterization techniques such as ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray reflectivity. Once films of desired thickness and quality can be deposited, the student will measure the permeability of deuterium through the films using our custom-built permeation instrument. This temporary position is ideal for a graduate student. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Operate and maintain the atomic layer deposition (ALD) system in LLE 2610, with support from the Tritium Science group. Characterize materials deposited with the ALD system using the appropriate facilities on the River campus. Operate and maintain the permeation measurement system in LLE 2610 to understand the fundamental behavior of bilayer thin-film hydrogen permeation barrier materials.
