About The Position

This position as a Project Archaeologist is a full-time position. The employee will participate in both office and field activities. The employee will function as part of a team to support the Principal Investigator and Providence’s clients for a variety of projects. Assignments will include assisting in writing research plans, site forms, and reports, conducting archaeological monitoring, site recording, pedestrian and subsurface survey, data collection and input, laboratory analysis, and other assigned tasks/projects.

Requirements

  • M.A./M.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field.
  • Must meet the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualifications standards for archaeology and be an RPA or be eligible to become an RPA.
  • Minimum of three years of archeological field experience with a professional cultural resources firm, with prior experience in Southeastern United States, required. Five years of professional archaeological field experience in Louisiana and/or the lower Mississippi Valley region, preferred.
  • Experience overseeing crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Ability to operate GPS units and navigate using USGS maps.
  • Experience in artifact identification of both prehistoric and historic material for the Southeastern United States.
  • Report writing experience as lead author or contributor.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record.

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and on varied terrain, sometimes for extended periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of professional archaeological field experience in Louisiana and/or the lower Mississippi Valley region, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Principal Investigator and Senior Staff with the planning of archaeological field projects these may include monitoring surveys, subsurface surveys, evaluations, and data recovery projects.
  • Oversee fieldwork for Phase I, II, and III investigations and the associated laboratory artifact cataloging, preserving, and analyzing of material recovered during those investigations.
  • May be required to oversee several field crews at one time.
  • Conduct pre-field research, provide portions of technical reports, complete site forms, or to complete small reports.
  • Ensure safety and quality standards, policies and procedures are complied with.
