About The Position

Starting Arts ( www.startingarts.com ) is a nonprofit arts education organization founded in 2002 with the mission of making arts education accessible to all children in the Bay Area, with a special focus on Title 1 students in under-served communities. Starting Arts is developing the Shared Arts Center of San Jose, a shared space that will become home not only for Starting Arts but four anchor arts organizations – Silicon Valley Shakespeare, Los Lupenos, ArtHouse Studio, and Playful People Productions. Other arts groups will come on board as word spreads about our vision. Starting Arts will be the lead partner in this endeavor, securing the funding and managing the Center’s logistics. The Shared Arts Center of San José is designed to allow arts groups to share resources and to promote artistic cross-pollination. This tailor-made Center will allow each organization to share state-of-the-art facilities, develop innovative theatrical experiences, and provide long-term stability for arts groups. We are seeking a Project & Building Manager who will be responsible for Starting Arts’ move into the new Shared Arts Center (located at 99 Notre Dame & 92 Sharks Way in San Jose) and then the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Shared Arts Center. The Project & Building Manager will report to the Executive Director or Artistic Director and will work closely with the senior administration and production staff. The position is designed to be a part-time position with up to 20 flexible hours.

Requirements

  • 4-6 years of relevant work experience
  • Familiarity and a passion for working with artists in multiple arts disciplines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail

  • Commercial real estate experience in property management is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develop project scope, timelines, budgets, and deliverables
  • Coordinate architectural, engineering, and design documentation
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies
  • Lead and manage contractors, subcontractors, and consultants
  • Serve as the primary liaison between owners, architects, engineers, and field teams
  • Facilitate regular project meetings and maintain clear communication
  • Resolve conflicts and support a collaborative work environment
  • Monitor project expenses and track budget performance
  • Negotiate vendor contracts and manage cost‑control measures
  • Create and maintain detailed construction schedules
  • Coordinate labor, materials, and equipment to prevent delays
  • Monitor daily progress and adjust plans as needed
  • Ensure all work meets design specifications, building codes, and industry standards
  • Address deficiencies and oversee corrective actions
  • Enforce safety protocols and compliance with OSHA and local regulations
  • Conduct or coordinate safety briefings and incident reviews
  • Promote a safe, hazard‑free job site
  • Provide regular progress updates to leadership and stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate project records, logs, and reports
  • Document milestones, changes, and close‑out requirement
  • Managing janitorial and repair staff and oversee building maintenance.
  • Handle safety or security issues should they happen.
  • Handling onsite tenant issues and service requests.
  • Oversee schedule of maintenance and renovation projects, including tenant improvements.
  • Manage and maintain a regular schedule to survey and inspect facility.
  • Hire and supervise the team of contractors and consultants required for the operations, maintenance of the facility (including construction contractors, and architects).
  • Ensure all areas of building safety and compliance, regulations with the San Jose Fire Department, Cintas etc..
  • Procure and manage necessary vendors for supplies and services for the facility.
  • Manage ordering necessary building products and coordinate deliveries.
