About The Position

Successful candidates will join the Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics ( ACCIDDA ) in the University of North Carolina ( UNC ) Chapel Hill Department of Epidemiology in a Programmer role. ACCIDDA is part of Insight Net, the CDC -funded network of centers of excellence for outbreak analytics and disease modeling, and includes the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Florida, University of Southern California, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists. In addition to being a Center of Innovation, ACCIDDA serves as the coordinating center for Insight Net. This Programmer position involves developing software and analytic tools to perform disease modeling and critical analytics in response to infectious disease outbreaks. Duties will include helping to implement predictive and analytic models of infectious disease using Python and R, deploying these models in response to disease threats, and implementing accessible data displays on web-based dashboards using JavaScript. This role includes documenting packages and code, through writing GitHub pages, development of vignettes, and use of in-code documentation systems and assisting in creating and maintaining GitHub repositories. This position will work with a dynamic and collaborative group of scientists and public health practitioners on problems that can have direct impacts on population health. Not only does this position involve numerous opportunities to work with other Insight Net centers and network public health partners, but it also has a direct impact on the work of the CDC Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics.

Requirements

  • Experience in a general purpose or scientific programming language (e.g., R, Python, C, Julia)
  • Skills in communicating technical information
  • Ability to work independently

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with version control systems such as GitHub
  • Experience with cloud- or cluster-based computing
  • Experience with systems management
  • Experience with statistical programming or mechanistic modeling
  • Experience with interactive data visualization (e.g., dashboards)
  • Experience working with scientific or public health groups
  • Experience working with public health data and/or infectious disease modeling systems is a strong plus
