About The Position

Performs complex administrative and supervisory program work. Work involves establishing program goals and objectives; developing program guidelines, policies, and procedures; developing schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving program goals; coordinating and evaluating program activities; and supervising the work of others. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Major course work in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field preferred. Each year of experience as described below in excess of the required three years may be substituted for fifteen semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning customer service, clerical, administrative support, technical program support, or mail operations experience.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.
  • Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the public.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Skill in problem-solving techniques.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related equipment in a stand-alone or local area network environment.
  • Skill to review technical data and prepare technical reports.
  • Skill in the electronic transmission of communications.
  • Skill to develop and conduct training.
  • Skill to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15-44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and operate motor equipment.
  • Conditions include working inside, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.
  • Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, and automobile.

Nice To Haves

  • Texas Department of Criminal Justice mail operations experience preferred.
  • Experience to supervise the work of others preferred.
  • Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations preferred.
  • Skill to type 45 words per minute (with no more than 10 errors) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced administrative support and technical program assistance work for the offender mail systems; responds to inquiries regarding technical program and administrative rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; and prepares, interprets, and disseminates information on agency programs and procedures.
  • Conducts on-site visits to audit mail room operations and interviews staff regarding mail operations; reviews publications; and prepares complex correspondence, reports, studies, forms, and documents.
  • Develops and presents training materials to agency staff; and compiles and edits data, makes calculations, and prepares reports.
  • Supervises the work of others.
  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
