About The Position

The Program/Student Advisor for the African American Academic Network at the University of Illinois Chicago is responsible for designing and executing strategies to recruit and retain African-American/Black students. This role involves comprehensive advising, career exploration, and the development of educational plans that align with students' aspirations. The advisor will also implement first-year success programs and initiatives to enhance graduation rates for this targeted student population.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • One to two years of experience with programs designed to support students of African American/Black Student background for first year success.

Responsibilities

  • Advise prospective and current students on academic matters, including college policies, program requirements, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Enhance a holistic educational plan to support students' academic and career goals, while monitoring their progress toward degree completion.
  • Provide resources to help students navigate college culture and engage effectively with faculty and staff.
  • Develop initiatives to increase enrollment of admitted African-American students and assist with UIC orientation for new students and families.
  • Create and facilitate workshops on major exploration, career development, internships, and graduate school.
  • Coordinate recruitment visits to high schools, two-year colleges, and community agencies to promote UIC at events targeting African-American students.
  • Build community partnerships to improve educational opportunities and present on the importance of higher education at K-12 schools.
  • Assist with applications for financial aid and scholarships; identify private scholarship opportunities and participate in related committees.
  • Analyze student data to identify trends in African-American enrollment and success; contribute to annual reports and program recommendations.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
