About The Position

The Adult Recreation Services Unit is currently accepting applications for new and returning staff for the following positions: Program Leader/Instructor, RCC Specialized Program Instructor, RCC We are looking for those who can facilitate, lead and/or instruct seasonal and/or drop-in recreational programs for Adults and Adults 55+ in Burlington in a variety of program areas including: Leisure Programs Art and Craft Programs: i.e. fibre arts, jewelry making Continual Learning Programs: i.e. history or special interest lectures, skill development, language instruction, culinary lectures Dance Programs: i.e. hip hop, jazz, tap, ballet Game programs: i.e. bridge, euchre Languages: i.e. German, Mandarin Music: i.e. Guitar, Ukulele Active Programs Group Fitness Programs: i.e. Pilates, Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, seated fitness, resistance training, cardiovascular endurance training, flexibility and mobility focused training. Sport Programs: i.e. Ability to facilitate and organize basketball, volleyball, soccer and racquet sports activities. Hours worked are dependent upon scheduled programs’ registrations and may vary from 0-27.5 hours per week. Program Instructors are supported by the Coordinator, Recreation Services in program development, scheduling, feedback and material/equipment needs and report to the Supervisor, Recreation Services.

Requirements

  • Completion of High School or equivalent
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Display patience, active listening skills and firm but fair decision-making skills.
  • Experience working with Adults and Older Adults (55 years of age and over) are requirements of this position.
  • All staff must complete mandatory training prior to their first shift; training is offered through a combination of online and in-person learning.
  • Leisure Programs Combination of experience, education and/or continual learning in area of program instruction A portfolio or demonstration of skills may be requested
  • Active Programs Certification from a recognized fitness association for fitness instruction. (e.g. YMCA, CanFitPro, RYT-200, Pilates, ZIN or equivalent)
  • Sport Program Instructors: Coaching certification (e.g., National Coaching Certification Program), workshops, clinics, or other related training considered an asset.
  • This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience or Rep playing experience in sports considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, delivering and facilitating inclusive recreational programs to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all program participants.
  • Creating program plans and reviewing them each season as needed.
  • Ensuring safety of participants and adhering to all health and safety protocols.
  • Maintaining required certifications, completing required and mandatory training and providing recommendations regarding customer feedback, lesson modification, and activity enhancements.
  • During program delivery, modifying structure or format of class is needed to accommodate participant numbers and needs.
  • Working collaboratively with Customer Experience and Facility Operations staff.
  • Report any facility or participant concerns to the Recreation Coordinator
  • Keeping accurate attendance records.
