About The Position

The Program Specialist is an essential part of the Outreach and Education Program. This position establishes workflow processes and procedures to ensure maximum efficiency and excellent public service. The Volunteer Coordinator manages the volunteer program, including recruiting volunteers, communicating with volunteers individually and through a monthly newsletter and regular meetings, matching volunteers to projects, and tracking volunteer hours and contributions.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, communication, marketing, history, education or related field.
  • Experience: One to two years of experience in communication, standard office procedures, marketing, education and human services.
  • Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Assess program and client needs and ensure program objectives are met.
  • Work with community members and other stakeholders to identify necessary programs and services.
  • Identify, suggest, or implement improvements to programs and services.
  • Plan and oversee outreach activities.
  • Review, interpret, and monitor compliance to guidelines, laws and regulations.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Interview volunteers to provide and gather information about the volunteer’s interest and skill sets for appropriate placement.
  • Nurture relationships with volunteers to make them feel part of the team.
  • Step in as needed to complete tasks assigned to volunteers.
  • Provide volunteers with orientation and training, including training on issues of safety and professional ethics.
  • Establish procedures for volunteer management and behavior; evaluate volunteer effectiveness; and handle any problems that arise (including “firing” volunteers if necessary.)
  • Plan and develop programs for volunteer appreciation and educational development, including recruiting and scheduling speakers.
  • May provide training or technical assistance to partners.
  • May coordinate activities of program committees or other groups and plan procedures.
