About The Position

The Calvert County Government Department of Community Resources, Office on Aging Division, is seeking a Program Specialist II to lead operations at the North Beach Senior Center. In this role, you will oversee daily center operations, supervise staff and volunteers, and develop engaging educational, recreational, fitness, and special event programming for older adults. This highly visible position also recruits and manages instructors, ensures a safe and welcoming facility environment, and actively promotes programs to encourage participation and community engagement. Performs specialized program work to plan, organize and oversee educational and recreational activities for older adults with the additional purpose to supervise the building's operation, maintenance requirements and staff of a senior center. Position reports to the Aging Services Program Manager.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of— Principles and practices of social work, education and recreation as applied to the needs of older adults
  • Operation of computers and a range of software applications.
  • Customer service standards.
  • Ability to-- Maintain equipment and building.
  • Develop and implement educational, recreational, leisure activity, and physical fitness programs for older adults.
  • Develop event and program content and materials for outreach.
  • Deal effectively with the public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain accurate client and financial records.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, recreation or gerontology, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with older adults which must include experience managing staff, daily operations, customer service and policy development and implementation.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aide within the first six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, recommends and coordinates implementation of recreational, educational, and physical fitness programs, including special populations; monitors and evaluates effectiveness of programs in meeting established goals and objectives; recommends and monitors changes to meet requirements.
  • Plans and oversees a variety of classes (arts, crafts, educational, physical fitness) and special events for older adults.
  • Teaches one or more classes.
  • Contributes to developing and implementing videos for the Virtual Senior Center.
  • Researches and recruits contracted instructors to offer programs for older adults.
  • Prepares contracts for instructors.
  • Assists with daily meal service operations for the senior nutrition program.
  • Inspects facility and ensures safety for participants and all staff.
  • Administers problems and complaints; enforces policies, enforces safety procedures and rules and regulations of various programs.
  • Advises supervisor of actions taken and provides written documentation.
  • Oversees trip plans, chaperones, collects fees, and keeps records for bus trips.
  • Assists with publication of Office on Aging newsletters.
  • Produces news releases, posters, social media posts, and fliers for publicity.
  • Prepares purchase orders for supplies/materials needed for programs/classes.
  • Maintains records of attendance and completes appropriate reports for all classes.
  • Collects fees and maintains financial and attendance records for classes and programs; completes appropriate reports.
  • Directs work of program staff, senior aides, volunteers and independent contractors, and Buildings and Grounds staff member.
  • Monitors condition of building and equipment, contacts appropriate maintenance workers.
  • Prepares and submits maintenance requests for repair to building and grounds.
  • Interacts with Office on Aging staff, North Beach Senior Council, Meals on Wheels, and outside agencies.
  • Advises citizens of available programming for older adults and encourages participation.
  • Responds to citizen phone calls and email daily.
  • Prepares professional correspondence.
  • Gives facility tours to new participants and visitors.
  • Prepares and maintains display case.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, workshops, and job-related training.
  • Coordinates public and private transportation for trips and special events.
  • Performs related work as required
