About The Position

The Program Administrator to the MIT Committee on Animal Care, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), will assist with all essential functions of the MIT Committee on Animal Care's (IACUC) administrative office which serves a community of nearly 150 research labs and 300 individual protocols. The role involves acting as a resource and a liaison between the MIT research community and DCM with the goals of maximizing animal welfare and scientific integrity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in animal science, biology, or related field.
  • A minimum of two years of administrative and/or program/project management experience, preferably direct IACUC regulatory experience.
  • Basic knowledge of issues pertaining to the use and care of animals in research, testing, and instruction.
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Commitment to promoting research animal welfare and scientific integrity.
  • Discretion and good judgment with confidential information and/or issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with laboratory animals in a research setting.
  • CPIA and/or ALAT/LAT/LATG certification.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the protocol review process by administratively pre-reviewing animal use proposals.
  • Train proposals for veterinary review and determine the level of review required.
  • Facilitate revision and responses between investigators and committee member reviewers.
  • Schedule and lead semi-annual site visits to facilities and animal use areas.
  • Generate reports flagging deficiencies and perform follow-up steps, including post-approval monitoring.
  • Assist with the implementation of an in-house developed electronic protocol software, including training new users to submit research proposals.
  • Provide administrative support to the CAC office by answering general email and phone calls.
  • Confirm researcher compliance with personnel training and occupational health requirements.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
