About The Position

Keystone Science School inspires curiosity and critical thinking through the lens of science to change lives and strengthen communities. KSS offers a variety of adventure and traditional camp activities within a structured environment designed to allow each camper and participant to understand their potential. In all programs, campers and participants will create lifelong friendships, explore and learn about the natural world, and gain leadership and wilderness skills. Seasonal Program Instructors will facilitate overnight outdoor education field trips during the school year. They are responsible for teaching a wide variety of curricula options offered by KSS, leading groups of up to 13 students in outdoor education programs including environmental science and team building curriculum. Program Instructors will execute lesson plans, prepare materials, facilitate meals, and complete manual labor tasks on a rotating basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or 6 months of college training + 3 months of teaching experience.
  • Minimum of 3 months of experience teaching students in an outdoor or classroom setting.
  • Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) with CPR certifications minimum.
  • Age 20+ with a minimum of 4 years driving experience, excellent driving record, and a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check.
  • Must be computer proficient and possess experience of Microsoft Office 365, Google Suite, Slack, and able to learn new software as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate verbally and teach in Spanish.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification.
  • Experience in overnight backcountry trips.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in a related field such as recreation, education, or a subject in the human services field.
  • Previous employment experience at Keystone Science School.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and teach a group of up to 13 K-12 students.
  • Review lesson plan and teach appropriate environmental education curricula.
  • Facilitate team building, leadership, and social emotional learning activities.
  • Teach evening programs, campus cleaning, meal set-up and clean-up, and on-call responsibilities.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Possibly instruct camping or cabin based programs during off-site programs at various locations around Colorado.
