About The Position

The Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator plays a pivotal role in executing the organization's mission by supporting disaster response, emergency services and community resilience initiatives. Reporting to the Innovation and Outreach Director, this role is responsible for maintaining and implementing comprehensive emergency management and crisis plan, coordinating internal and external preparedness efforts and fostering strong partnerships with community stakeholders, nonprofit and government agencies. This position requires the ability to work collaboratively across departments, engage community partners and respond effectively during emergency situations to ensure the safety, preparedness and resilience of both the organization and the communities it serves.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in emergency management, disaster response or relief, public administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of relevant local and national regulations and best practices in disaster response.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make critical decisions during emergency situations.
  • Experience working in or with a nonprofit organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, thought partner, organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with enabling productivity tools such as Microsoft 365, Asana, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms.

  • Emergency Management Certification (e.g., Certified Emergency Manager - CEM) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response Planning: Maintain and update the organizations comprehensive disaster response and emergency crisis plans.
  • Work alongside Innovation and Outreach Senior Director to ensure plans align with best practices, regulatory requirements, and organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with local authorities, community organizations, and first responders to ensure alignment of efforts.
  • Emergency Response Coordinator: Serve as a key point of contact during emergency situations, facilitating communication and coordination among internal teams and external partners.
  • Support real-time disaster response efforts and post-incident evaluations.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination among community partners during emergency situations.
  • Training and Preparedness: Coordinate and support emergency management trainings for staff and partners.
  • Collaborate with People and Culture to integrate emergency preparedness, safety protocols, and training.
  • Coordinate and schedule semi-annual fire drills and emergency exercises.
  • Conduct internal safety inspections and support corrective action planning as needed.
  • Resource Management - Work alongside Innovation and Outreach Senior Director to coordinate the procurement and distribution of necessary resources during disaster events.
  • Community Outreach and Education: Promote community awareness and engagement in disaster preparedness and resilience.
  • Conduct educational programs and workshops on disaster preparedness and resilience.
  • Travel to community sites as needed to support outreach, training, and partner engagement efforts.
  • Incident Reporting and Documentation - Prepare incident reports for grant applications and regulatory compliance.
  • Grant and Fundraising Support - Assist Director and Grants Program Officer in writing grant proposals and fundraising campaigns to secure funds for disaster response efforts.
  • Collaboration and Networking: Collaborate with local, state, and national emergency management agencies, nonprofits, and community organizations.
  • Attend relevant meetings, conferences, and workshops to stay informed and build partnerships.
  • Develop and implement a personalized, individual JEDI growth plan to establish and track JEDI Competency baselines.
  • Participate in annual JEDI training.
  • Support UWRI JEDI initiatives (e.g., Equity Challenge) and participating/supporting agency groups (e.g., Heritage and Professionals, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Culture, Equity and Strengths Committee (CES)).
  • Participate in community, state or national (e.g., United Way Worldwide) JEDI growth opportunities.
