This position is to support collaboration between Dr. Hanna and the Charleston Waterkeepers (CWK). Duties will include curation and processing of a water biobank with ~1000 samples from 8 locations dating back 5 years, and to coordinate and plan continued water sampling. Processing each water sample will include both genetic extraction and chemical extraction. The technician will assist with 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing data analysis to characterize bacterial community profiles. Analyses will focus on long-term patterns and environmental factors that contribute to pollutant composition and human health exposure risks. Long term, the goal of this project and the future studies it will support is to make progress towards essential baseline observations in our region and to make South Carolina an example for rigorous environmental and public health research that can be expanded to other regions. This work will take place at the Hollings Marine Lab at Fort Johnson.
