About The Position

Professional tutors provide remote and in-person tutoring services to individuals and groups. Professional tutors work at all DCC locations (Poughkeepsie, DCC@Fishkill, and DCC@HVR). For this position, we are seeking tutors who have experience in one or more subject areas taught at DCC including, but not limited to, economics, government, history, psychology, languages and speech. Tutors with experience in other subjects taught at DCC are encouraged to apply. This position will report to the Tutoring Coordinator for the Learning Commons. The Learning Commons provides academic support to students that promotes deep engagement with learning materials and fosters an appreciation for curiosity, exploration, and growth. The Learning Commons includes a variety of academic support services (Ritz Library, Math & Science Center, Writing Center, Office of Accommodative Services, Testing Services, and CSTEP). The primary responsibilities of the Professional Tutor are to clarify and reinforce course content, assignments, and material for specific subject areas. The Professional Tutor also provides guidance with helping students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to student success. These include, but are not limited to, goal setting, learning strategies, time management, organization, and self-direction. Professional tutors also provide guidance to students regarding all academic supports available to provide any needed intervention. Professional Tutors advocate for student educational achievement to the highest attainable standard, support student goals, and uphold the educational mission of the college.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree, in a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students as a Professional Tutor.
  • Previous experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction.
  • Ability to teach learning strategies to students.
  • Ability to lead small group tutoring sessions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context as well as flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Flexible schedule; ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree, preferably in higher education or a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students.
  • Experience working with students in a community college environment, preferably in the delivery of academic support services.
  • At least two years of experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction.
  • Experience working with ESL students.
  • Experience working with students to develop their reading comprehension skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person and remote tutoring to DCC students, either individually or in small groups.
  • Participate in, and assist with facilitating, Learning Commons workshops and programming activities.
  • Assist with data gathering for Perkins grant reporting.
  • Become knowledgeable about, and adhere to, institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Seek professional development opportunities related to tutoring practices, student success, student engagement, best practices for academic support, etc.
  • Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Manage technology needed to support tutoring programs, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, TutorTrac, and Bookings.
  • Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students.
  • Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
