Main 6 is a 26 bed Cardiac-Thoracic Interventional Unit. The team cares for cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical patients. Many of these patients have undergone open heart surgery-bypass, valve, vascular and thoracic surgery. In some situations, the team collaborates with the research team for patients involved in cardiac research trials. Most of these patients are admitted directly to the unit from home, operating room, cardiac processing unit or cardio-thoracic intensive care unit. Main 6 is a fast-paced, high-energy unit that offers nurses an opportunity to practice at the top of their licensure. The care of these patients may include complex oral and intravenous medication regimen, chest tubes, temporary pacemakers, significant experience with cardiac rhythm interpretation, and experience in caring for patients participating in cardiac research trials. This unit offers a unique opportunity for both novice and experienced nurses to fine tune skills and/or build a strong foundation of cardiac acute care experience that may open additional opportunities in the future. Main 6 offers the opportunity to enhance assessment skills, collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, time management, and prioritization.
