About The Position

The position involves performing maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems commonly installed in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities. The technician operates independently with minimal direct supervision, develops first-line customer relations, and identifies potential sales opportunities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • HVAC-R Technical School Degree preferred.
  • 7 years of experience in the field for external candidates or 5 years with Certification from a Technical School.
  • 3 years as a Certified Technician with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment for internal candidates.
  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record in accordance with the Fleet Policy.
  • Physical ability to walk distances, bench and crouch, climb ladders, work at high elevations, and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly motivated.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic maintenance tasks and use of hand tools.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration and/or knowledge of commercial refrigeration and HVAC preferred.
  • Strong leadership and business acumen.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Superior decision-making ability and paperwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers.
  • Matches customer needs with potential sales opportunities and completes rapid/accurate diagnosis.
  • Manages truck inventory, orders, receives, bills out, and maintains parts responsibly with minimal waste.
  • Maintains a clean vehicle and performs required maintenance on time.
  • Completes necessary documents and electronic communication in a thorough, accurate, professional, and timely manner.
  • Utilizes hand-held devices to complete necessary paperwork and invoicing requirements.
  • Systematically checks all joints, installs PVC drain pipes, sets and trims cases, installs and adjusts glass doors and frames.
  • Uses temperature sensors, brazing and soldering techniques, and determines proper coil layout in complex boxes.
  • Accurately identifies pipe size and fittings by sight, performs system refrigerant and oil conversions, and tests oil during conversion.
  • Electric welds a variety of metals and joint types.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and correctly sizes thermostatic expansion valves.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, TEV troubleshooting and replacement, and tracing complex schematic diagrams.
  • Understands low/high pressure oil systems, split condensing/low ambient controls, refrigerated equipment startup, EMS controls, CO2 refrigeration, and air flow characteristics.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of gauge, scale, recovery, ECM, shaded pole, PSC, three-phase motors, and compressor operating parameters.
  • Detects and repairs leaks on conventional systems and parallel racks, conducts compressor diagnosis and replacements.
  • Serves as a mentor to other technicians and leads HVAC/R PM programs.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
