About The Position

The UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is looking to hire a Casual Professional Flight Nurse to support MedEvac 5, located in Lemont Furnace, PA. The Professional Flight Nurse functions as a member of the critical care transport team and is responsible for the care of critically ill or injured patients transported by the STAT MedEvac system. Responsibilities include patient care incorporating assessment, stabilization, and intervention techniques consistent with standards and protocols approved by the Medical Director. The Flight Nurse is expected to execute independent judgment in order to deliver appropriate care that is consistent with the clinical protocols, when contact with a medical command physician is not possible. The Flight Nurse functions as a part of a team and shares responsibility for the team's conduct. The Flight Nurse fulfills education and experiential requirements as established by the STAT MedEvac Medical Director, and performs other duties as assigned. Supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives, of the STAT MedEvac system at all times.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Three years clinical experience in critical care and/or emergency department or RN applicants who have two years of experience and currently function as an RN in one of the UPMC Health System's tertiary critical care units or emergency departments.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam that includes a maximum height/weight restriction of 6-2 and less than or equal to 210 pounds.
  • Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization by the Medical Director.
  • Must have the ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • RN applicants who have two years of experience and functioned previously as a Flight/Critical Care Transport Paramedic may be considered based on assessment of his/her role as a paramedic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced life support to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care; assessing online medical command or other resources when appropriate.
  • Participates in developing and completing research projects.
  • Reflects a positive attitude to the customer in a high stress environment at all times, with a clear understanding of who the customer is.
  • Performs all assigned duties, including daily, weekly, monthly, or other duties assigned by the base site manager.
  • Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using educational resources that are required or made available.
  • Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
  • Reports for work well rested, and fit for duty. Adhering to the drug and alcohol policy at all times.
  • Maintains clean patient environment as well as crew quarters.
  • Participates constructively in the peer-review driven quality improvement program.
  • Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements.
  • Ensures safe operation of patient laden stretcher employing appropriate stretcher discipline at all times.
  • Adheres to rules for scheduling, including schedule requests, minimum time, and availability.
  • Demonstrates competency related to pharmacological interventions.
  • Actively participates in the development and training of new staff.
  • Ensures the safety of patients and all others.
  • Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
  • Selects and uses personal protective equipment appropriate to the level of the anticipated hazard.
  • Completes all official documentation in a timely manner such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc.
  • Adheres to the current uniform policy.
  • Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers.
  • Participates in scheduled and unscheduled outreach activities, representing the UPMC and STAT MedEvac system.
