About The Position

The Production Underwriter at Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance Company is responsible for writing new commercial lines accounts to enhance profitability. This role involves building and maintaining strong agency relationships, developing a commercial lines book of business, and utilizing risk assessment to identify business opportunities. The position requires regular travel to assigned agencies to promote and negotiate higher agency rankings, as well as mentoring other underwriters.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of industry best practices, standards, and multiple discipline underwriting concepts and broad business segment.
  • Able to multitask and solve complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with agents and other departments.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to visit assigned agencies on a regular basis.
  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance or a Finance degree; experience in lieu of degree acceptable.
  • CPCU, AU, or CIC certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a commercial lines book of business with assigned VIP agencies.
  • Utilize understanding of risk assessment and exposures to identify business opportunities to maximize assigned territory loss ratio and growth objectives.
  • Meet business goals through new business development and overall profitability of assigned territory underwriting large, challenging, and complex commercial business policies.
  • Travel to assigned agencies on a regular basis to build on agency partnerships and promote/negotiate higher agency ranking position.
  • Actively seek opportunities to promote Michigan Miller's products and services.
  • Understand how to apply rating methodology and less frequently used coverages.
  • Network within the insurance community to stay abreast of marketplace changes and emerging industry issues.
  • Serve as a mentor providing technical support, training, and problem solving for other underwriters on an ongoing basis.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
