The Four Corners Fossil-Fuel Generating plant is located 18 miles west of Farmington, a community of about 40,000, in the northwest region of New Mexico. Because the Four Corners Fossil-Fuel Generating plant is on the Navajo Reservation, Navajo preference will apply in the job selection. SummaryAPS has an immediate opening for a Production Trainee at our Four Corners Power Plant. Upon successful completion of the Production Trainee Program (maximum six months), you will be promoted to the next classification and continue progressing toward becoming a fully qualified Power Plant Auxiliary Operator.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be eighteen (18) years or older.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Pass both the EEI mechanical aptitude test (MASS) and the EEI operations aptitude test (POSS).
  • Must live within reasonable distance (one (1) hour) of headquarters.
  • Pass a panel interview.
  • Pass APS physical exam (drug test, etc.).
  • This position requires working with aerial equipment, which has weight restrictions of 300lbs or less.
  • Employee must have the ability to physically perform the emergency response activities effectively which include but are not limited to: Carry or drag a victim up to 100 lbs. at least 18 feet Don/wear a SCBA respirator 40 lbs. (additional to PPE) Perform firefighting activities as outlined within the Fire Brigade limited response tasks Don/wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that can weigh up to 50 lbs. Perform emergency response activities in potential high heat scenarios Perform tasks at heights if and when needed Carry materials/tools/hose (10-100 lbs.) a distance of up to 84 feet and descend/ascend 3 flights of stairs.
  • Employee is required to participate in the medical monitoring program which includes: A standard physical examination, vision, hearing and blood testing (complete blood count, lipid profile, complete metabolic panel, HbA1c), EKG (resting or exercise) and pulmonary fitness testing)
  • Must successfully complete all required training for Production Trainee within 6 months of hire.
  • Reasonable and necessary overtime will be required.
  • Production Trainee will report to Operations based on projected plant needs.
  • This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.

Responsibilities

  • Support the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective production of electric energy.
  • Supply and prepare equipment, tools, materials, and protective devices needed for various jobs.
  • Haul and position materials and parts; assist as needed on tasks.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and a forklift.
  • Perform digging and backfilling using hand tools.
  • Spend the first 180 days split between classroom training and fieldwork (e.g., helper or laborer‑type duties)
  • Complies with safety and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Complies with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Successfully completes all assigned training per the training plan.
  • Hauls and positions material and parts. Assists as needed.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools and forklift.
  • Digs and back fills with hand tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
