About The Position

At Mesa Labs, the Production Packaging Operator I is an entry-level role focused on the safe, efficient, and high-quality packaging of the company's products for distribution. This position involves using packaging materials, machinery, and manual labor to prepare products for shipment or storage. This position specifically supports Mesa's SDC business, which manufactures and sells biological and chemical indicators that assess the effectiveness of sterilization and disinfection processes for pharmaceutical, healthcare, and dental industries.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Ability to inspect products and packaging for defects, ensuring high-quality standards.
  • Capable of performing repetitive tasks and handling small to medium-sized products with precision.
  • Basic understanding of how to operate packaging machinery and troubleshoot simple issues.
  • Ability to work effectively with other packaging staff and production workers.
  • Ability to meet packaging deadlines and maintain production speed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members about production status and any issues.

Responsibilities

  • Package finished products according to specified guidelines and customer requirements, using appropriate materials such as boxes, bags, shrink wrap, and labels.
  • Operate basic packaging machinery, such as heat sealers, bagging machines, labeling machines, and carton sealers.
  • Assemble and prepare product cartons, ensuring that the correct quantity, size, and product specifications are met.
  • Place products into containers, trays, or other shipping materials while ensuring proper alignment and secure packaging.
  • Perform visual inspection of packaged products to ensure no defects or damage before they are sealed or sent to the next stage of the production process.
  • Verify the packaging material, labeling, and product contents to ensure they meet company specifications and quality standards.
  • Report any discrepancies, damaged products, or packaging errors immediately to supervisors or quality control teams.
  • Ensure that the packaging is sealed, labeled, and prepared according to the required standards for storage or shipment.
  • Monitor product quality by inspecting for any signs of damage, contamination, or mislabeling.
  • Operate basic packaging machines, ensuring machines are running correctly and efficiently.
  • Perform simple troubleshooting tasks on packaging equipment if issues arise, such as jams, misfeeds, or malfunctioning components.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to maintenance or supervisor and assist in basic maintenance tasks, such as cleaning or minor adjustments to packaging equipment.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, ear protection, and safety glasses.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following company health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure that packaging processes comply with industry standards, company guidelines, and any regulatory requirements (e.g., food safety, product labeling).
  • Follow proper waste disposal procedures for packaging materials and other byproducts.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory levels of packaging materials and report any shortages to supervisors.
  • Retrieve packaging materials from storage, as needed, and ensure that materials are organized and accessible for the packaging line.
  • Track and record the use of packaging materials to ensure accurate inventory management.
  • Assist in setting up the packaging area for the day’s production runs and help with the breakdown of the area at the end of the shift.
  • Work with other team members to meet daily packaging production targets and maintain workflow.
  • Support other departments, as needed, including helping with assembly, labeling, or sorting products.
  • Document work completed, including product quantities, packaging materials used, and any issues encountered during production.
  • Communicate with supervisors regarding packaging issues, delays, or quality concerns.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing improvements in the production and packaging processes.
