About The Position

The Production Mechanic is responsible for repairing, modifying, and upgrading rail cars. This includes rebuilding car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors. The role involves welding, fabricating, and using a torch and carbon arc to cut materials. The mechanic performs mechanical labor and maintains railcars according to blueprints and specifications, utilizing hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments. Responsibilities also include inspecting machines and equipment, measuring, cutting, and threading pipes, and assembling sub-assemblies and major components to ensure proper operation.

Requirements

• Formal education, high school or equivalent.
• Knowledge of mechanical skills.
• Skills in welding and cutting.
• Must pass company established welding test.
• Decision making and reasoning skills.
• Planning and scheduling abilities.

Responsibilities

• Repairs, modifies, and upgrades rail cars.
• Rebuilds car components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors.
• Welds, fabricates, and uses torch and carbon arc to cut.
• Performs mechanical labor.
• Repairs and maintains railcars according to blueprints and specifications.
• Inspects machines and equipment visually and by touch to locate causes of trouble.
• Measures, cuts, and threads pipes, and replaces airlines using hand tools.
• Assembles sub-assemblies and major components, checking function to test for proper operation.
• Repairs broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment.
