Product Management Intern

EmersonAustin, TX

About The Position

Product managers lead a product’s lifecycle, from strategy and planning to development, launch, and ongoing management, bridging business, user experience, and technology to deliver customer-focused outcomes that achieve business goals. As a product management intern at Emerson’s Test & Measurement (formerly NI) business unit, you will work directly with tenured product managers, software engineers, product marketers, and others, on real problems that affect real customers. By the end of the summer, you'll have a concrete understanding of how software products are shaped by user needs, competitive dynamics, and technical constraints.

Requirements

  • To be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Interest in how software products are built and why users adopt them
  • The ability to move between technical conversations with engineers, strategic discussions with business stakeholders, and communicating complex ideas clearly in writing and in person
  • Hands-on experience with data analysis, user research, or software development - including coursework, internships, or personal projects
  • Legal Authorization to work in the United States – sponsorship will not be provided for this role

Nice To Haves

  • To be pursuing a master’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field (graduating December 2026 or later)
  • Comfort with ambiguity; you must be able to define your own path when things aren’t fully spelled out
  • Experience with test & measurement, embedded systems, or industrial software is a plus, but not required.
  • Familiarity with marketing and sales processes

Responsibilities

  • Customer & market discovery — Translate qualitative and quantitative feedback into clear problem statements and user personas.
  • Competitive & strategic research — Track industry trends and benchmark NI’s offerings against competitors. Summarize findings for stakeholder audiences.
  • Cross-functional collaboration — Partner with Product Engineering to clarify product requirements, review design tradeoffs, and keep work aligned with product intent.
  • Launch preparation & post-release analysis — Support the creation of release notes, internal briefings, and launch success metrics. Analyze post-launch usage data to surface opportunities for iteration.
  • Creation of compelling demos — explore new user workflows possible through the use of data and AI.
  • Depending on team needs and your interests, your summer project may prioritize any of the above responsibilities as a focus area
