The Mechanical Design Engineer at Vac-Con plays a key role in the design, development, and continuous improvement of vacuum trucks, hydro-excavation equipment, and other heavy-duty industrial products. This position ensures that all customer and operational requirements are met through efficient system design, validation testing, and performance analysis. The role serves as a central technical resource supporting manufacturing, quality, sales, and marketing to bring innovative, reliable, and cost-effective equipment to market.

  • Design and develop new systems and components for vacuum and hydro-excavation trucks, as well as improve existing product designs.
  • Collaborate with sales and production teams to adapt existing designs into new configurations to meet customer specifications while minimizing engineering time-to-market.
  • Utilize standard design principles and modular design methodologies to optimize performance and manufacturability.
  • Work closely with manufacturing to maximize production efficiency, ensure design accuracy, and support lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Conduct validation testing and failure analysis to ensure product performance and quality meet Vac-Con standards.
  • Create design templates, drawings, and documentation to improve engineering throughput and maintain consistency across product lines.
  • Partner with R&D and Product Management to ensure new designs incorporate usability, durability, and market competitiveness.
  • Support field teams and customers with technical expertise and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Communicate customer and end-user feedback to drive product enhancements and future development.
  • Ensure all designs comply with regulatory, environmental, and safety standards relevant to heavy equipment manufacturing.
  • Manage multiple design projects, ensuring deliverables align with project timelines and budget constraints.
  • Travel as required to customer sites for operational reviews, prototype testing, or field evaluations.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Electrical or Industrial Design considered).
  • 3–5 years of experience in mechanical or systems design, preferably in truck body or heavy equipment manufacturing.
  • Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical systems is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in 3D parametric modeling software such as Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, creative, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation abilities.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
  • Experience with 3D printing and computer-aided manufacturing technologies preferred.
