About The Position

The Core Structural Systems organization at Ford Motor Company is seeking an employee to work as a Thermal Joining Engineer, Subject Matter Expert (SME). The Core Structural Systems Department writes and maintains the core quality documents, Engineering Specifications, and Design Rules for use by the engineering teams for Bodyshop Thermal Joining which includes, but is not limited to Resistance Spot Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Laser Welding and Fastener Projection Welding. Also included in the responsibilities will be working with internal and external Thermal Joining Laboratories to provide feasibility for joints on new programs, new materials, TVM actions, and production issues.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related physical science field of study.
  • 3+ years of experience working with Thermal Joining or similar.
  • 3+ years of experience using CAD tools including Catia and/or Teamcenter.
  • 1+ years of writing DFMEA's, Engineering Specifications, and Design Rules.

  • M.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related physical science field of study.
  • 7+ years as a Joining Engineer or similar experience.
  • Multiple automotive launches.

Responsibilities

  • Author Design Rules, Engineering Specifications, and update these documents as required.
  • Feasibility assessment of program-specific material combinations during the development phase, including sign-off on joint feasibility testing results.
  • Sign-off thermal joining related requirements at key program milestones.
  • Planning, execution and evaluation of thermal joining trials with new materials and/or joining processes in internal and external laboratories in alignment with cross functional teams.
  • Support CAE methodologies development to improve simulation of thermal joining - close collaboration with CAE methods teams and laboratory testing required.
  • Act as the 'go to' SME for Product Development team for thermal joining.
  • Collaborate as part of a cross-functional team including Research, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers in developing and implementing new thermal joining processes in Ford.
  • Lead/participate in solving production issues with VO, Materials, STA, and Purchasing, including Stop-Ships, Field Service Actions, Warranty, Material Shortages.
  • Incorporate lessons learned into Quality Documents.
