We serve a diverse, global audience of people who rely on ChatGPT in their everyday lives and work. As ChatGPT grows, we’re exploring advertising as one way to support long-term sustainability—while holding an extremely high bar for user trust, transparency, and safety. Advertising at OpenAI is built to serve the mission first, not to maximize engagement or revenue at the expense of user experience. The Consumer Ads team shapes how advertising lives within the ChatGPT experience for millions of users. The work focuses on designing ad formats and interactions that are seamlessly woven into the product—deeply contextual, highly relevant, and genuinely useful. The ambition is for ads to feel additive rather than intrusive, helping users discover meaningful products and services while preserving trust, clarity, and coherence. Our ads approach is grounded in a few core principles: Mission alignment: Advertising must support OpenAI’s mission and long-term benefit to users. Answer independence: Ads never influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Helpful, accurate responses always come first. Conversation privacy: User conversations are private. We do not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers. Long-term value: We prioritize trust and experience over time spent or short-term optimization. Choice and control: Users have clear controls over personalization and can always choose an ad-free experience. Design plays a critical role in upholding these principles. We’re hiring a product designer to help define what responsible, transparent, and user-first advertising looks like in an AI-native product and setting a new standard for the industry.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing digital products; more senior candidates welcome.
  • Familiarity with design systems and complex interaction patterns.
  • Experience working closely with engineering, product, and policy partners.
  • Proficiency with Figma and modern design workflows.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with consumer products, ads and monetization is a strong plus.
  • Have experience shipping large scale software products.
  • Have a portfolio showcasing strong UX, UI, and interaction design skills, with a high bar for quality and craft.
  • Love thinking through complex interaction design problems.
  • Possess impactful communication and storytelling skills.
  • Enjoy tackling ambiguous problems and shaping them into a clear vision.
  • Get excited about being immersed in the AI research process and defining how AI-first products should look and behave.

Responsibilities

  • Define the vision for what an AI-native advertising experience should be for millions of users.
  • Design advertising formats and interactions that feel additive to the core ChatGPT experience—relevant, contextual, and thoughtfully integrated.
  • Build a new set of advertising products from the ground up in a fast-moving, zero-to-one environment.
  • Partner with product, engineering, research, and policy teams to define new ads surfaces, systems, and workflows from the ground up.
  • Design user-facing controls for ad personalization, data usage, and opt-out flows, as well as intuitive interfaces for advertisers to manage campaigns responsibly.
  • Navigate complex tradeoffs between business needs, user trust, and long-term platform health.
  • Create thoughtful artifacts that help align cross-functional teams and guide execution across both consumer and console experiences.
  • Contribute to a design culture that values clarity, restraint, and responsibility as much as craft.
