About The Position

The Surface Finishing Lead is responsible for overseeing daily operations in the finishing department including wet processing, painting, masking/unmasking, and part marking activities for aerospace metal fittings. This role ensures quality, safety, and production standards are met, while providing hands-on support, guidance, and training to department personnel.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications in aerospace manufacturing processes preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in aerospace metal finishing operations, including wet processing and painting.
  • Previous leadership experience preferred (e.g., Lead, Senior Operator, or Supervisor-in-Training).
  • Strong knowledge of aerospace surface finishing standards and specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Understanding of masking/unmasking techniques and correct use of protective coatings.
  • Familiarity with part marking methods (e.g., ink stamping, laser marking, vibro-etching).
  • Knowledge of chemical handling and safety protocols for wet processing environments.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and handling of small parts.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required (e.g., gloves, safety glasses, respirators).
  • Exposure to chemicals, paints, and processing equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NADCAP, AS9100, or other aerospace quality standards.
  • Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience with ERP systems for production tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the workflow for wet processing (e.g., chemical processing, anodizing, plating), painting, masking/unmasking, and part marking activities.
  • Perform in-process inspections to ensure parts meet internal and customer specifications.
  • Provide hands-on support in finishing operations as needed to meet production demands.
  • Train and mentor finishing department personnel in techniques, equipment use, and safety protocols.
  • Ensure adherence to customer drawings, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Monitor and maintain safety practices in the department, ensuring compliance with company policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance to resolve any non-conformance issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Schedule work assignments to meet production priorities and deadlines.
  • Monitor supply inventory related to finishing operations and submit requisitions when necessary.
  • Conduct regular inspections of tools, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes, reduce waste, and enhance quality.
  • Accurately document production records, traveler sheets, and shop floor data entries.
