About The Position

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is seeking a Process Plant Supervisor to lead the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of our power plant water process/treatment facilities. This advanced role is ideal for candidates with water treatment/purification experience and a strong foundation in water chemistry including processes such as cold lime softening and evaporative water purification. In this position, you will provide day-to-day leadership for process plant operations, coordinate and prioritize work, and reinforce a strong safety culture through effective planning, job hazard analyses, and pre-job task controls. You’ll monitor plant operating data to optimize treatment performance, ensure regulatory compliance, manage inventories of treatment chemicals and lab supplies, and respond confidently to emergent conditions in alignment with site response plans. The Process Plant Supervisor is a hands-on leader who partners well across operations and maintenance, supports employee development, and helps build an inclusive, collaborative work environment focused on service excellence. This is advanced work, including limited supervisory duties, in power plant water process plant operation, repair and maintenance. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its supervisory responsibility.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, supplemented by appropriate technical courses, and six (6) years of experience in process plant operation and maintenance of water purification processes (such as Cold lime softening and evaporative water purification) and/or water chemistry processes, including three (3) years of supervisory, technical or leadership experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials and theories of operation of a water process/treatment plant.
  • Thorough knowledge of functions and servicing requirements of related mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Thorough knowledge of mathematics used to compute flow rates, volumes, chemical dosage, feeder settings, process indices, and laboratory analysis.
  • Skill in care and use of process treatment equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to plan, direct and supervise work of others.
  • Ability to develop lesson plans and instruct others.
  • Ability to perform varied analyses on water samples.
  • Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation, troubleshoot and correct problems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work directly from blueprints, flow diagrams, and piping schematics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public.
  • Work requires normal color vision to distinguish the color and severity of many control and safety devices.
  • Ability to use personal protection equipment including hearing protection, eye protection, foot protection, hand protection, and head protection and use of respiratory protection including self-contained breathing units.
  • This position requires the ability to use respiratory protection equipment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Work at heights of over 100 feet on open grating or from aerial devices required, including the ability to climb and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions including the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 50 pounds without assistance and to stand, kneel and stoop.
  • Must communicate orally, see physical surroundings, listen, hear others, respond to verbal commands, and demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to prolonged high noise levels.
  • Work may require performance of tasks in extreme heat; and by entering and maneuvering within confined spaces.
  • Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry may substitute for two (2) years of the required non-supervisory or non-lead experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises operation and maintenance of the process plant facility.
  • Supervises, plans and coordinates work of subordinates.
  • Manages and provides a safe work environment.
  • Ensures proper work planning is conducted.
  • Writes and/or approves Job hazard analyses and ensures pre-job task checklists are completed.
  • Participates in and ensures behavioral safety observations are made.
  • Manages and provides a culture of providing total service excellence to internal and external customers.
  • Ensures all regulatory compliance standards are maintained.
  • Responds in emergency situations as a competent individual providing leadership and direction in accordance with site Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure and Facility Response Plan.
  • Reviews plant operation data to control treatment process.
  • Maintains inventory of treatment chemicals, laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Reports deficiencies in any plant equipment and systems and plans repair activities.
  • Participates in labor agreement administration.
  • Cultivates an inclusive and collaborative work environment that is free from harassment and discrimination.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
  • Establishes and implements preventive maintenance program for process plant facility equipment and systems and maintains related records.
  • Instructs process plant operations section in plant training program.
  • Assists in developing process plant operations curriculum.
  • Prepares detailed records and reports in a timely manner.
  • May be required to transport, mix, handle or use hazardous materials (other than cans of gasoline, batteries, pumping fuel or access to normal janitorial cleaning materials) or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current, fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees.
