How You’ll Help Us Connect the World As a Research and Development Engineer Intern, you will be responsible for improving processes, creating prototypes, and expanding laboratory capabilities as part of the CCS. You will work closely with the R&D Design Engineers to build and analyze prototype injection molds and develop a vapor smoothing system for the Additive Manufacturing Lab. This role will be based in Apex, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a bachelor’s (upcoming sophomores, juniors & seniors) or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering from an accredited university
  • Proven strong academic performer with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Basic understanding of injection molding processes, polymer properties, and additive manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) and simulation tools is a plus.
  • Must possess unrestricted work authorization and not require future sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Have experience with mold flow analysis, particularly thermal analysis
  • Have experience working in a laboratory with prototyping and manufacturing equipment
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Able to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and effectively meet deadlines
  • Strategic and creative thinking; distinguished written and verbal communications skills

Responsibilities

  • Performing analysis of multi-material injection molds , including flow behavior and improvement of thermal properties.
  • Supporting simulation and validation of mold designs to ensure optimal performance and quality.
  • Researching and developing a vapor smoothing system for improving surface finish and dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed prototype parts.
  • Conducting experiments and trials to evaluate smoothing effectiveness and process parameters.
