Coatings Process Engineering Intern – Indianapolis, IN As a Process Engineering Intern at Allegion’s Indianapolis facility, you’ll support our finishing processes—copper, decorative nickel, chrome and zinc plating, powder coating, e-coating, and architectural anodizing. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and operators in operations, maintenance, materials, and engineering to learn how we maintain and improve our processes, and to develop hands-on skills in process capability analysis and improvement. This role will be a fulltime summer internship (10-12 weeks) based at our Indianapolis Exits facility. This opportunity will offer a competitive hourly rate plus a potential housing stipend, and a flexible start date between May and June ending in August. Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. The company does not intend to provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B, TN, etc.) for this employment position.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Familiarity with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and eagerness to learn process-control software
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter attitude; able to manage multiple small tasks under supervision

Responsibilities

  • Assist in daily monitoring of finishing processes: plating, powder coat, e-coat, and anodizing
  • Gather and organize process data (bath chemistry, line speed, quality metrics) for team review
  • Support root-cause investigations for out-of-spec conditions under guidance of senior engineers
  • Participate in small improvement projects, such as optimizing rinse cycles or fixture designs
  • Help maintain process documentation (work instructions, SOPs, batch records) and update logs
  • Shadow cross-functional teams in maintenance, materials management, and production planning
  • Contribute to process capability studies: collect sample data, calculate Cp/Cpk, and prepare simple charts
  • Present findings and recommendations at intern roundtables or team meetings
