Process Engineering Intern (Material Flow)

Magnera CorporationBenson, NC

About The Position

Internship Duration: MAY 18th - AUGUST 7th Magnera's purpose is to better the world with new possibilities made real. For more than 160 years, the originating companies have delivered the material solutions their partners need to thrive. Through economic upheaval, global pandemics and changing end-user needs, they have consistently found ways to solve problems and exceed expectations. By bringing together these legacy companies, the distinct scale and comprehensive portfolio of products will bring customers more materials and choices. With a combined legacy of resilience, Magnera will build personal partnerships that withstand an ever-changing world. The purpose of this internship is to support and enhance material flow throughout the manufacturing plant. The intern will conduct detailed time studies, analyze current processes, and recommend improvements that directly impact raw material ordering, in process movement, finished goods storage, and scrap/waste stream management, to inhance mainlines and converting efficiency. This role is ideal for someone interested in manufacturing operations, industrial engineering, continuous improvement, or supply chain management.

Requirements

  • Rising Juniors or Seniors pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master's in Business Administration, Industrial Management, Operations, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong presentation, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Professional attitude and willingness to learn
  • Desire to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to analyze data, create reports, prepare presentations, and document process improvements.
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to analyze data, create reports, prepare presentations, and document process improvements.
  • Microsoft Visio
  • Ability to create clear process maps, flow diagrams, and layout representations to support material flow analysis and improvement planning.
  • Lean Six Sigma Concepts
  • Foundational understanding of Lean and Six Sigma principles, including waste reduction, visual management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Actionable insights into raw material movement, finished goods flow, and waste stream efficiency, directly influencing operational excellence, cost reduction, and sustainability.
  • Raw Material Flow OptimizationThe intern will analyze how raw materials enter and move through the plant, focusing on improving upstream efficiency. Key activities include:
  • Mapping the current raw material flow from the Distribution Center (DC) to the production lines.
  • Identifying opportunities to maximize receiving and staging efficiency.
  • Evaluating optimal ordering strategies (timing, quantities, sequencing) to support continuous flow.
  • Recommending improvements for transport, handling, and material staging layouts.
  • Finished Goods Movement & Storage AnalysisThe intern will evaluate how finished goods leave production and flow back to the DC, focusing on efficiency, storage utilization, and product integrity.
  • Studying current FG movement paths, staging, and storage locations.
  • Calculating the average number of “touches” per pallet/carton across the system.
  • Measuring the damage rate of finished goods and identifying root causes.
  • Assessing space utilization and recommending layout or process changes for higher efficiency.
  • Proposing improvements for outbound flow back to the DC.
  • Waste Stream & Scrap ManagementThe intern will examine the full waste and scrap stream to improve disposal efficiency, timing, and cost performance.
  • Conducting time studies on scrap handling and waste‑removal processes.
  • Determining the optimal waste pickup schedule based on actual volume and production timing.
  • Quantifying all categories of waste generated by the plant.
  • Analyzing the total cost associated with scrap and waste disposal.
  • Recommending opportunities to reduce waste generation or streamline handling.
