About The Position

The Problem Solving Specialist team will serve single adults experiencing homelessness throughout San Francisco, including locations such as streets, county jail, or shelters. Specialists primarily operate out of ECS Access Points but may spend a majority of their day in the field providing services for those who cannot travel to an Access Point. The job description may change as ECS collaborates with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing and other stakeholders to implement the best approach and services. Responsibilities include screening and assessing individuals using standardized tools, employing a client-centric and trauma-informed approach, and providing crisis intervention assistance as needed. Specialists will track and report progress, maintain accurate records, and engage with community partners.

Requirements

  • Masters or Bachelors Degree in psychology, counseling social work, or related field a plus OR at least 3 years experience closely related to the job description.
  • Substantial or demonstrated knowledge/experience working with individuals in crisis or unstable housing situations.
  • Strong knowledge of issues confronted by adults with substance abuse, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues, history of trauma, and co-occurring diagnoses.
  • Demonstrated respect for and willingness to work with a diverse client population.
  • Deep knowledge of resources available to homeless and low-income residents of San Francisco.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
  • Professional demeanor with good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Organizational skills to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of efforts.
  • Collaborative work style with the ability to work independently.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office software required; knowledge of the ONE System preferred.

  • Ability to adapt to changes in Coordinated Entry activities.

Responsibilities

  • Screen and assess single adults experiencing homelessness using standardized tools.
  • Support individuals in avoiding entry to shelter or street homelessness by identifying creative solutions.
  • Analyze information and practices to define barriers to Problem Solving resolutions.
  • Engage participants in problem-solving dialogue to assess additional resources.
  • Provide crisis intervention assistance as needed.
  • Make authorized, prioritized referrals into housing programs.
  • Conduct follow-up to ascertain the effectiveness of Problem Solving activities.
  • Track and report progress and services for each client.
  • Maintain accurate records and enter required data in the ONE System.
  • Provide culturally relevant support and advocacy to program participants.
  • Serve as a liaison to community-based and governmental service partners.
  • Participate in staff training and development activities.
  • Engage with the Manager of Problem Solving Services for program refinements.
  • Ensure confidentiality of participant information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
