About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Court Service Coordinator and Chief Judge, the Cocopah Probation will monitor and supervise adults and juveniles sentenced to probation throughout the entirety of their probation term and enforce Court ordered conditions of probation. Bring probationers before the Court when their probation is violated, conduct pre-sentence, pre-dispositional, and pre-petition investigations, file with the Court and download written reports with recommendations to the Court, and serves notices of hearings to individuals. Work is subject to odd hours of work and on-call status. Position is part-time, not eligible to work more than 29 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of law enforcement and public relations activities.
  • Knowledge of the Cocopah Nation's geography and road locations.
  • Knowledgeable of Cocopah Tribe/Native American customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of Tribal, State, and Federal criminal justice systems.
  • Knowledgeable of Evidence-Based Practices in community supervision.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a structured office environment.
  • Ability to comprehend, retain, and recall factual information, and learn and apply acquired skills and techniques to the performance of assignment duties.
  • Ability to protect the public in court and enforce the laws with due regard for the rights and safety of individuals.
  • Ability to integrate training, experience, and common sense sufficient to identify potentially dangerous situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice, and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Ability to accept the dangers and stresses, regimentation, discipline, and time demands.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with probationers and their support system.
  • Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible court documents.
  • Ability to work with juvenile offenders and adults convicted of crimes.

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with the Cocopah Indian Community.

Nice To Haves

  • Be either firearms certified and/or Taser certified.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, which may be obtained after hire.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge, preferably with Windows and Word Applications.
  • Dependable, stable, and emotionally mature.

Responsibilities

  • Attends all criminal Court hearings and meets with individuals placed on Pre-trial Services or supervised probation.
  • Conducts an intake assessment with each newly placed probationer and reviews the conditions of probation.
  • Meet weekly with probationers for face-to-face office visits unless otherwise directed.
  • Conducts unannounced home visits with each probationer no less than one time per month and upon each change of address.
  • Refers probationers to Court-ordered treatment programs and monitors attendance and compliance.
  • Issue written directives to enforce orders of the Court.
  • Conducts drug and alcohol tests at a rate of no less than one time per week.
  • Assess each case to determine if their behavior warrants early discharge from probation or an increase in their term of probation if further intervention is necessary.
  • Staff cases that are displaying violative behavior with the tribal prosecutor for an appropriate course of action.
  • Prepare probation court documents and submit them to the Court Services Coordinator for review and filing.
  • Request warrants or summons for violations of probation and prepare and file such.
  • Conducts probation searches of vehicles, homes, or persons if warranted.
  • Provides services to judicial and/or government officials as designated.
  • Assists the Tribal Marshal in courtroom security.
  • Assists the Tribal Marshal in the transportation of prisoners and maintaining security or control of inmates appearing before the Tribal Court.
  • Assists the Tribal Marshal in the transportation and security of inmates who must receive medical treatment outside of a detention facility.
  • Enforce all rules & regulations of the Tribal Court.
  • Locates probationers to be served by using telephone directories, State, County, City, or Public records and serves or delivers documents as necessary.
  • Testifies in court to present evidence or testify during Violation of Probation Hearings.
  • Serves court papers, warrants, or subpoenas as required.
  • Generate monthly vehicle reports.
  • Schedule regular maintenance on the GSA vehicle assigned.
  • Attends training classes and seminars on court security, techniques, safety, first aid, marksmanship, and related law enforcement activity.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required with court staff.
  • Other duties and unscheduled work hours may be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintain all records of adults and juveniles placed on probation and create a probation file.
  • Enter all sentencing information into the database and enter all information throughout the term of probation.
  • Monitor and enforce payment of court-ordered assessments and ensure that defendants and probationers sign Waivers of Assessments.
  • Daily checks on arrests to verify if probationers have been arrested.
  • File petitions with the Court to revoke, modify terms, or discharge individuals placed on probation.
  • Make written referrals to other providers identified as necessary or ordered.
  • Establish working relationships with other treatment providers in the areas.
  • Communicate monthly with treatment providers and obtain treatment progress reports and attend all treatment meetings involving the probationers.
